Overview..

The period of adolescence (between the ages of 11-15) is especially unique as children in this group experience more rapid physical, social, and emotional growth than at any other time in their lives. The Mount Anthony Union Middle School program has been designed to meet the emerging needs of this age group while developing strong academic skills. We became an Affirmed Turning Points School in 2005 which means our commitment to middle level principles and practices has been recognized by the National Turning Points Organization. Turning Points practices involve improving learning, teaching, and assessment for all students; building leadership capacity and a collaborative culture; using a data-based inquiry and decision-making process; creating a school culture that supports high achievement; networking with like minded schools; and developing district capacity to support change.

One way that we strive to meet student needs is through our organizational structure. In order to support small learning communities and make learning more personal, MAUMS is divided into two equal “Houses”. Each house shares common unified arts faculty and facilities and contains both seventh and eighth grade teams balanced by ability, gender and sending schools. Teams vary in size from approximately 50 to 100 students. Students will move from grade to grade within each house so that they experience consistent counselors, teachers, and administrators. Within the team structure, the academic areas of mathematics, English, social studies and science are covered. A special education teacher works closely with each team to meet the needs of all students.

In addition to a rigorous academic program, Mount Anthony Union Middle School offers a full contingent of exploratory courses. These are all described in this brochure. Although single subject course descriptions are listed, correlations are drawn among and between the subjects wherever possible. Learning becomes more meaningful as the curriculum is integrated.

During a child’s early adolescence, parents play a critical role in assisting in the development of self-confidence, encouraging family communication, supporting the child in academic endeavors, and reinforcing the skills gained through homework. At the middle school level, homework averages about 60-90 minutes per night.

Because we believe that good communication between school and home provides the best foundation for your child, we have prepared this booklet for you. It presents useful information that we hope will provide your child and you with a successful middle school experience.
