School Counseling Program..

The School Counseling Services at Mount Anthony Union Middle School are designed to assist students in becoming more aware of their abilities and goals in their quest for self-understanding and knowledge. The School Counseling Staff includes School Counselors and a Student Assistance Counselor. All Counselors are available to assist in the transitions into and out of middle school.

The school counselors meet with students individually during the year when appropriate. They assist students with school adjustment, mediations, and other issues that may arise. School Counselors are also involved in testing, scheduling, developing Individualized Educational Plans, and consulting with parents, teachers and community service providers. School Counselors offer classroom presentations on topics related to adolescent development and peer relationships.

All services provided by the School Counseling Staff are confidential except where law mandates reporting. All suspected incidents of abuse and neglect will be reported to Social and Rehabilitation Services. All threats of harm to self and others will be reported to the appropriate authority. Consent to receive and release information will be obtained in situations including other involved parties.

The Student Assistance Counselor provides short-term services related to mental health and substance use concerns for students and their families. The Student Assistant Counselor identifies students’ needs and then refers to community service providers when necessary. The Student Assistance Counselor is available to provide short-term individual counseling services during the school day. Student support groups are offered through the year as needs are identified. The Student Assistance Counselor provides support to parents on how to communicate with their child about areas of concern. Consultation is available to teachers on how to integrate alcohol and drug education into the classroom on an ongoing basis, as well as how to respond to individual student needs. The Student Assistance Counselor provides substance abuse prevention classes. Students may be referred to the Student Assistance Counselor by any member of the school community including a friend, teacher, counselor, nurse, administrator, parent, or by themselves.
