Sixth Grade Language Arts..
The sixth grade language arts curriculum is multifaceted. Independent reading, guided reading, and read aloud strategies, provide the foundation for the reading program while several genres of writing are also explored. In addition, comprehension analysis, and other reading skills are part of the curriculum. Additionally, effective writing skills, author’s craft, and the development of student portfolios round out the course.
Reading strategies include word identification skills (prefixes, suffixes, analysis of text, and root words), self-monitoring comprehension (did I understand what I just read?), and developing a breadth of vocabulary. Students are also taught how to skim and scan text selections in order to extract pertinent information. Reinforcement of reading fluency is included and aids in comprehension.
Literary elements such as metaphors, poetic devices, alliteration, flashbacks, and imagery are used to teach initial understanding of text. Making inferences about cause and effect, determining character’s motivation using supporting information, and explaining how point of view affects interpretation, are some of the essential teaching goals aimed at improving analysis and interpretation of text. There are no required readings for grade six in the SVSU. Some of the materials students may use in the classroom include: novels, poetry, magazines, anthologies, newspapers, and graphic novels.
