Sixth Grade Science..

mt. anthony union middle school The science curriculum in our school district follows a “spiral” approach. This means that students learn about earth, physical, and life science each year. As they move from each grade level, each type of science builds on the work from the previous year. In grade six, the topics explored include those listed below:

Life Science: Students study the structure and life processes of cells, including mitosis; protists and fungi, bacteria and viruses. They also learn about reproduction, including inherited and acquired traits. Some time is also spent on the evolutionary process.

Physical Science: Here students explore the nature of matter. They study physical and chemical properties; elements, compounds and mixtures; acids and bases, and the atomic structure.

Earth Science: In this branch of science, students learn about forces and motions (gravity, friction, action/reaction of objects). They also study the theory of plate tectonics, the creation and movement of continents, and earthquakes and volcanoes.
