Handbook Health Services..

The Nurse's Office may be found on the first floor, near the library. A nurse is on duty daily during school hours. There is no nurse available after 2:30. Students must present a pass when coming to the nurse's office. If coming at lunch, a pass must be obtained from a teacher on duty in the lunchroom.

General Information: Students with an elevated temperature and/or other signs of illness will be excluded from school. Students should be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school. It will be generally accepted that students well enough to attend school will participate in all activities unless a note from the physician indicates otherwise. Students who are absent from school, or who are sent home because of illness, may not participate in extra curricular activities on that day (including dances).

Immunizations: Vermont State Law requires that all students who enter a Vermont school must have the following:
  • DPT - 3 doses - the last dose administered more than six months after the previous date.
  • ORAL POLIO - same as above
  • TETANUS BOOSTER - required every 10 years
  • MMR - two doses - If first dose administered after first birthday, second dose must be administered before entering the seventh grade.
  • At entry into 7th grade, students must have completed or be in the process of completing the three dose series of Hepatitis B.
Children may be exempted from immunization requirements for medical, religious or moral reasons, provided papers are filled out and on file in the school. If parents fail to present either proof of immunization or signed statement of exemption, the student must be excluded from school.

Medication policy for prescription AND non-prescription drugs (including Tylenol and Advil): The SVSU recognizes that at the present time many children are able to attend school because of the effective use of medication. When at all possible, it is more desirable to administer medication at home. Non-prescription medications may be administered at school only with a signed permission from the parent/guardian. Any student who is required to take prescribed medication during the regular school day must comply with the following school policy:

a) Written orders from a physician; the order to include:
  • child's name
  • name of medication
  • purpose of medication
  • permission forms provided by the nurse must be on file and signed by both a parent and a physician. The nurse WILL NOT give prescription to students unless written orders from a physician are on file.
b) All medication must be brought in ORIGINAL, LABELED CONTAINER and given to the school nurse.
c) Medication must be stored in a locked cabinet in the nurse's office.

STUDENTS MUST BRING ALL MEDICATION TO THE NURSE - IT MUST NOT BE STORED IN LOCKERS.
