  1. What is the Academic Expo?
  2. The Academic Expo is an avenue for students to present a variety of aptitudes in a non-competitive way. It is an exposition of a student or a group of students’ talents, hobbies, interests, and/or academic endeavors. This includes but is not limited to the following:
    1. Academic projects and/or assignments that demonstrate excellence in any subject/content area
    2. Hobbies, interests and talents above and beyond that of school. For example:
      1. Poetry writing
      2. Equestrian
      3. Art
      4. Woodworking
      5. Cooking
    3. Music, theatre or dance
    4. Group performances
      1. Band
      2. Chorus
      3. Comedy
  3. Who can participate in the Academic Expo?
  4. Any 6th through 8th grade student is welcome to participate in the expo. The more students that sign-up the greater the evening will be.
  5. How do I sign-up for the Academic Expo?
  6. This year we would like to “Go Green” and have students sign-up online through the MAUMS website. The link should be posted no later than the 20th of January. Sign up by clicking on the button on our home page.
  7. Does a student need to get approved to participate in the Academic Expo?
  8. Yes, a student or group of students will be required to fill out an online form describing what they are going to present the evening of the Expo. We need this information for a variety of reasons. It is important to know how many students will be participating to provide the appropriate number of chaperones; gather materials and equipment needed like extension cords etc; figure out the spacing availability; and program information. Approval is needed also to determine whether the presentation is appropriate for school.
  9. Does a student need to be at the expo to be a part of the evening?
  10. Yes, all students who participate are required to be present the night of the Expo. The purpose of the evening is to showcase your works and talents. You should be there to demonstrate and explain your work. Please make sure that when you commit to the Academic Expo that you do not have sports or other conflicts on that evening.
  11. When is the Academic Expo?
  12. This year the event will be held on Thursday, March 11th. The evening will begin at 6:00 in the Cafeteria. Students participating may stay afterschool to set up. Please make sure that you make arrangements for dinner if you plan on staying at school until the evening begins.
  13. Who is running the Academic Expo this year?
  14. Mr. Hansen and Ms. Keklak are officially the Academic Expo Coordinators, but any teacher in the building can help you with a project. Ms. Keklak and Mr. Hansen need to have your final online form when you decide to participate for planning purposes.
  15. Does an adult need to oversee our presentations?
  16. Yes, we would like any student that is participating to have an adult sponsor to help you through the process of putting together presentations and monitoring progress. The sponsor can help you with materials and with any questions that may need to be answered. The sponsor can be any teacher or adult that has agreed to sponsor you. You need to ask and receive permission from your sponsor before submitting your entry to participate.
  17. Can a student participate in more than one event?
  18. Yes, but you should clear that with Mr. Hansen or Ms. Keklak first. We have had students perform a song and a project on the same night. We would just need to know ahead of time so that we can plan out the evening appropriately.
  19. Is there a deadline for signing up?
  20. February 26th is the deadline for signing up. You can sign up any day prior to February 26th. After that date, the planning and programming for the night will have been completed.
Any additional questions and concerns can be sent to Mr. Hansen and Ms. Keklak

activitiesFamily Book Club
maums activities Family Book ClubFamily Book Club meets monthly and is open to the whole family. Reading and discussing books brings people closer together and we have a great time sharing what we've read. The idea of having a "family" book club is to have our middle school students reading the same book as someone else in the family, be it a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, cousin or sponsor.

Books are passed out during the first meeting and we will discuss them at the next meeting. It's great fun and the treats are good, too. Watch the web site announcements area for meeting dates and times.
